Categories

Each entry on the LutWik belongs to at least one category, which is a way to collect similar words. Here are some categories that make it easy to browse words:

• Category:animals
• Category:birds
• Category:fish

All of these three categories are a member of the super-category Category:nouns. Each of those categories also has a corresponding category for English:

• Category:English animals
• Category:English birds
• Category:English fish
• Category:English nouns

Normally a red link means the hyperlinked page does not exist, but that is not true for categories.

Update

• The LutWik has more than 600 entry pages!
• As entries have been created, different formats have been tested for consistency and readability. There is now a new format that should greatly improve readability, and it has been applied to all of the LutWik entries. This gives all of the word entries a consistent look that should make it easier to find the information on the page.
• One of the most important changes is a verification count check that shows how many times an entry has been checked for accuracy. No matter how carefully an entry is created, mistakes occur in the formatting and content. This verification process helps the editors keep track of which entries need to be verified and gives readers an indication of how thoroughly an entry has been confirmed.
• Another important change is the addition of a category called "one source". This is used for word entries that have only one reference source cited. A higher number of sources generally means that the content of the entry is more trustworthy. This category will be used as a way to identify entries that need more citation sources. (This category has not yet been applied to all pages with just one source.)

wiʔaac and welcome to the Lushootseed Wiki Dictionary project.

The objective of this project is to create an online dictionary by including words that are documented as being used in Lushootseed (Puget Salish). The contributors to this project are linguists who love languages and would like to contribute to the knowledge of Lushootseed. It is our intention to carefully document the sources of all the words provided on this website and clearly indicate our reasons in those relatively few cases where we have made guesses concerning a word.

As outsiders to the community or communities of Lushootseed, we hope that this website can be of use to people who speak Lushootseed. It is the intention that every word listed be from reliable sources. It is also the intention to provide information in an acceptable manner and in a way that is easy for people to access, particularly in these days of smartphones and tablets. We hope that people will find this resource a convenient way to look up words.

It has come to our attention that there were some religious terms on this website that members of the community may find inappropriate. Although they are from publicly available sources, we have removed them. We apologize for any offense that was taken.

Lushootseed is an amazing language, filled with wonderful words and many complexities. We would love to receive corrections and suggestions. Please e-mail to: lutwik + at symbol + langrev, followed by dot com.

We are still working to configure this wiki, but much progress has been made. The FAQ (see left column for link) has been started.

The ultimate goal of this dictionary is to define every word in every variety of Lushootseed into English and even every other language of the world. It will never happen, but that is the scope of the project.

This wiki can be edited by anyone, but due to spamming, contributors must now request an account. Send your account request to lutwik + at symbol + langrev.com. Please include your desired user name. You will receive a confirmation e-mail. Please sign in and change your password.

After you have an account, to display Lushootseed letters when editing a page, please go to "preferences" in the upper right corner, click the "gadgets" tab and check "<gadget-Edittools>."
