wiʔaac and welcome to the Lushootseed Wiki Dictionary project.

The objective of this project is to create an online dictionary by including words that are documented as being used in Puget Salish. The contributors to this project are linguists who love languages and would like to contribute to the knowledge of Puget Salish. It is our intention to carefully document the sources of all the words provided on this website and clearly indicate our reasons in those relatively few cases where we have made guesses concerning a word.

As outsiders to the community or communities of Puget Sound Salish, we hope that this website can be of use to people who speak Puget Salish. It is the intention that every word listed be from reliable sources. It is also the intention to provide information in an acceptable manner and in a way that is easy for people to access, particularly in these days of smartphones and tablets. We hope that people will find this resource a convenient way to look up words.

It has come to our attention that there were some religious terms on this website that members of the community may find inappropriate. Although they are from publicly available sources, we have removed them. We apologize for any offense that was taken.

Puget Sound Salish is an amazing language, filled with wonderful words and many complexities. We would love to receive corrections and suggestions. Please e-mail to: lutwik + at symbol + langrev, followed by dot com.

We are still working to configure this wiki, but much progress has been made. The FAQ (see left column for link) has been started.

The ultimate goal of this dictionary is to define every word in every variety of Puget Sound into English and even every other language of the world. It will never happen, but that is the scope of the project.

Signing up and copyright

This wiki can be edited by anyone, but due to spamming, contributors must now request an account. Send your account request to lutwik + at symbol + langrev.com. Please include your desired user name. You will receive a confirmation e-mail. Please sign in and change your password.

After you have an account, to display Lushootseed letters when editing a page, please go to "preferences" in the upper right corner, click the "gadgets" tab and check "<gadget-Edittools>."

Creating a new entry

A template is now available that simplifies the process for making new entries. Only a noun version is currently available. To use it, go to Create_new_noun.

The other way to create a new entry is to enter the word in the search box in the upper right corner of any page and press enter. An option will appear to create a new entry if it does not yet exist. Please note that all Lushootseed entries should start with a small letter ("sqigʷəc" not "Sqigʷəc"), and English entries should start with a capital letter only when that is the standard form ("Monday," "Washington," etc.)

  • Tip: There is a lot of formatting in entries. To help, we are working on a template that you can fill in. In the meantime, the easiest way to make an entry with formatting is to copy the contents of a different entry and just replace where necessary. Here are some examples:
səxʷpupuhigʷəd - with English, Cherokee and Spanish translations
kʷəsyú - a dxʷləšucid noun with a cited source
Concrete - an English place name
  • Note on accent marks: Entry words in Lushootseed should not have accent marks. They can be added as alternate spellings. See swədəbš for an example.
