Proto-Coast Salish is a theoretical language reconstructed by comparing the pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar and other aspects of modern languages with each other.
The evolution of Lushootseed is generally believed to be: Proto-Salish > Proto-Coast Salish > Proto-Central Salish > Lushootseed > Northern, Southern and other dialects.
Reconstructed forms are indicated with an asterisk. Example: *qəlx̌ (see qəlx̌)
